The City of Angels proved fertile ground for Frieze’s 2023 edition in Los Angeles—its largest show there to date. The fair boasted more than 35,000 visitors over the four-day run, all flocking to the Santa Monica airport to see what more than 120 galleries had on view. On-the-ground reporting revealed another crush of VIP attendees—including a few celebrities—with many roving the extensive grounds in golf carts to ensure they took in all of the art on display.

Galleries across the board reported strong sales (they rarely say otherwise) with many finding buyers for works in the first few hours of the VIP day.

As always, we do not list sales without accompanying price figures, but a plethora of galleries reported brisk results, though they declined to provide exact numbers. David Kordansky sold out its solo presentation of Chase Hall in the first few hours of the fair, and Pace sold works in a range of media priced between $45,000 and $2 million, including Yoshitomo Nara’s work on paper Remember BTB (2020) and a small-scale version of Hank Willis Thomas’s sculpture The Embrace (2023).

Meanwhile, Gagosian sold out its booth of new paintings and works on paper by Rick Lowe; Perrotin sold out its dual presentation of works by Josh Sperling and Aya Takano, plus works by Jean-Michel Othoniel and Daniel Arsham; and Victoria Miro completely sold out its booth of works by rising-star painter Doron Langberg. In the Focus section of the fair, co-curated by Amanda Hunt and Sonya Tamaddon, Patron sold out its booth featuring artist Greg Breda, while young dynamo Veronica Fernandez’s paintings all found buyers at Sow & Tailor’s booth.

Below, see our list of reported sales from Frieze L.A. 2023.
