Contemporary Istanbul – Turkey’s leading art fair and the first international art event since the city went into lockdown – has announced the 56 galleries and non-profit art organisations participating in the 16th edition, as well as a series of Curated Exhibitions. Taking place at a new location: Tersane Istanbul from 7-10 October, the fair will bring contemporary art to one of Istanbul’s most important heritage sites, following a major regeneration project to breathe new life into the historic Halic Shipyard and the Golden Horn district.
Contemporary Istanbul, launching the city’s autumn art season, will bring together exhibitors from around the world to highlight the dynamic contemporary art scene that has risen out of Istanbul in recent decades. Exhibitors include AB Gallery (Seoul), Berman Gallery (Johannesburg), Claudia Schmidt (Zurich), C24 (New York), JD MALAT GALLERY (London), Marlborough Gallery (New York), Mohsen Gallery (Tehran), Anna Laudel (Istanbul / Düsseldorf), Dirimart (Istanbul), Galeri Nev (Istanbul), Galerist (Istanbul) Oktem Aykut (Istanbul), Pi Artworks (Istanbul / London), Pilevneli (Istanbul) & KÖNIG GALERI (Berlin) and Zilberman (Istanbul / Berlin).
Reflecting contemporary art practice, themes and trends, Contemporary Istanbul’s three Curated Exhibitions include: ‘Akrasia’, showcasing the work of 10 women artists from Turkey, with the revenue to be donated to environmental causes; a sculpture exhibition focusing on upcycling materials; and ’70s Bodrum’, presenting Sitki Kosemen’s photographs of the seaside resort of Bodrum.

The 16th Istanbul coincides with the opening of three new museums: Painting and Sculpture Museum by Emre Arolat Architects; the new Istanbul Modern Museum by the master of museum design, Renzo Piano, and the new Ataturk Cultural Centre (AKM) by Tabanlioglu Architects, asserting Istanbul’s position as a world-leading capital of culture.
