David Zwirner Will Launch a Third Space in New York This Year

In what might signal the beginning of an uptown renaissance, megadealer David Zwirner has announced plans to expand to a new site at 34 East 69th Street, in the former Richard L. Feigen & Co gallery. The space is set to be operating by fall of this year.

The move marks a return to the neighborhood for the gallerist, who ran the now-defunct Zwirner & Wirth with fellow dealer Iwan Wirth in the area for nine years. The gallery closed its doors in 2009 after the partners decided to pursue separate ventures in Chelsea.

He will be sharing the building with the newly-founded advisory firm Adler Beatty, headed by former Feigen director Frances Beatty and her son, Alexander Adler.

“Alex and I are really excited about our new venture, and about sharing space with David Zwirner,” Beatty told ARTnews. She went on to describe hearing of the powerhouse dealer’s interest in the neighborhood as a “eureka moment.”

“It’s a revival of the Upper East Side as gallery territory,” Beatty said. “And a lot of galleries that are downtown want to be uptown. After 37 years on the Upper East Side, it’s great to see it being revived.”

Other galleries have recently taken a similar route and moved uptown.

Galeria Nara Roesler relocated to the Upper East Side this past February, and Gavin Brown and Elizabeth Dee both headed to Harlem in the last year.

Zwirner will, of course, join fellow mega-galleries such as Hauser & Wirth and Gagosian, which are longtime neighborhood residents.

Zwirner’s budding empire seems to be growing at a steady pace: this be will the gallery’s third venue in New York—joining the two Chelsea spaces—in addition to the existing London outpost and upcoming Hong Kong location, which is slated to open later this year.
