Scottish-born artist Peter Doig is on trial in Chicago this week, in a case that has many legal experts scratching their heads. He’s being sued by a former corrections officer who says he owns a painting by Doig; Doig says it’s not his, and the owner is suing for millions.

So what are the auction prices that convinced Robert Fletcher and Chicago art dealer Peter Bartlow that they had struck gold with their supposed Doig canvas? Here are the artist’s top 10 auction sales, drawing on data from the artnet Price Database.

Notably, Doig’s market is on the rise. Nine of his top 10 prices came within the last three years; two of them were set by the same painting three years apart.
